La Salle runner advances to national meet
The Cincinnati Enquirer
Allen Bader, LaSalle's two-time defending DivisionI state cross country champion, qualified for the national finals of the Foot Locker Cross Country Championships in Orlando, Fla., with a third-place finish at the Midwest regional in Racine, Wis., Saturday.
In a steady rain over a muddy course at the University of Wisconsin-Parkside, Bader ran the 3.1 miles in 15:27, 16 seconds behind the winner, Tim Moore from Novi (Mich.) High School.
The course was horrible and there was 2 inches of mud the entire way, Bader said. My strategy was to get out fast, stay near the front and don't get into any trouble.
Bader is LaSalle's fourth runner to qualify for the national meet. Doug Bockenstette finished seventh in 1993; Dean Fulmer was sixth in 1994, and Steve Padgett was ninth in 1999.
It wasn't important winning today, Bader said. My goal was to qualify for Orlando.
As a junior, Bader ran in the Midwest Regional and finished ninth. Only the top eight qualify for the national meet, which will be run at Oak Trails Golf Course on Dec.8.
We've now sent the most runners to the national meet from the Midwest, LaSalle coach Frank Russo said. Most of the Foot Locker people think that the four from the same school since 1979 is a national record.
In the latest Harrier magazine national poll, LaSalle is ranked No.6, one spot behind Hudson, the Division I state team champion.
