Late men's college basketball

No. 2 Illinois holds off So. Illinois

The Associated Press

LAS VEGAS — Frank Williams scored 19 points and No. 2 Illinois converted four straight free throws to hold off Southern Illinois 75-72 and win the Las Vegas Invitational.

Williams, a preseason All-American, had another poor shooting night, making just 7-of-21.

“That was their Super Bowl and they played like it,” Illinois coach Bill Self said of Southern Illinois' effort. “If they had beaten us, it wouldn't have been a huge upset. We didn't play a great game and we got their "A' game.”

Sean Harrington had 14 points, Brian Cook added 12 and Cory Bradford 10 for Illinois (5-0).

Kent Williams had 23 points to lead Southern Illinois (4-1).

        Marquette 72, Gonzaga 63

ANCHORAGE, Alaska — David Diggs scored 15 points, going 5-for-5 from 3-point range, to spark Marquette to a 72-63 victory over Gonzaga in the championship game of the Great Alaska Shootout on Saturday night.

Travis Diener scored 14 points, seven assists for Marquette (5-0) and combined with Cordell Henry to hold Gonzaga star Dan Dickau to 10 points.

Zach Gourde led Gonzaga (3-2) with 15 points and six rebounds.

        No. 20 Indiana 77, Texas 71

ANCHORAGE, Alaska — Dane Fife scored seven points in the last four minutes as Indiana defeated Texas for third place in the Great Alaska Shootout.

Fife picked up his fourth foul with less than two minutes gone in the second half and went to the bench. He returned with about four minutes left and hit a 3-pointer that tied the game for Indiana (3-1) 63-all at 3:45.

After a miss by the Longhorns' Chris Owens, Fife rebounded, was fouled and hit the first of two free throws to give Indiana the lead for good.

Jared Jeffries finished with 22 points and led the Hoosiers in rebounding with eight.

T.J. Ford led the Longhorns (1-3) with 16 points and eight assists.

        Notre Dame 97, Tennessee-Chattanooga 84

HONOLULU — Ryan Humphrey and Matt Carroll each scored 20 points to lead Notre Dame to a 97-84 victory over Tennessee-Chattanooga in the semifinal round of the Hawaii Pacific Thanksgiving Classic on Saturday night

Notre Dame (4-0) will meet Monmouth in the title game Sunday.

Chris Thomas and Harold Swanagan each had 19 points, and David Graves added 13 for the Irish. Swanagan and Graves each finished with 10 rebounds.

Tim Parker led Tennessee-Chattanooga with 23 points and seven rebounds.
