FAIRFIELD — An unsuccessful candidate for the Fairfield Board of Education has filed a complaint with the school board, alleging officials are doing nothing to address derogatory messages about him.

        Arnold Engel and his wife, Susan, each filed complaints last week in which they refer to a student who had the message “Engel is an idiot” on his car. The high school student's car was seen on school property between Oct. 31 and as late as Nov. 16, when it was parked at the middle school where the Engels' son is enrolled.

        “By allowing my son's classmates to see this car outside the middle school building, you are sending the message to my son's classmates that it is OK to call my son an idiot and you are supporting the teasing and taunting of my son,” Mrs. Engel wrote in her complaint.

        Mr. Engel also alleges that a group of administrators, teachers and staff who supported the recent failed levy are tolerating “Engel bashing.”

        Mr. Engel campaigned vigorously against the levy.

        Superintendent Robert Farrell said he was investigating the incident involving the student car.

        “I'm not supportive of any student or staff member making fun of anyone for their political views,” Mr. Farrell said.
