Storms do damage in Indiana
The Associated Press
Cleanup work began Sunday, a day after unseasonable thunderstorms passed through Indiana. They left destroyed and damaged homes and businesses in Shelby County, closing down Interstate 74 and causing power outages in the county and elsewhere.
No injuries or fatalities were reported.
The National Weather Service planned to send a field crew from Indianapolis today to determine whether a tornado or straight-line winds destroyed an auto body shop about 8:30 p.m. Saturday in Gwynneville, 25 miles southeast of Indianapolis.
The roof and one wall of the body shop were ripped away, with vehicles inside destroyed.
At least 12 homes in eastern Shelby County suffered structural damage, including several with roofs blown off, the weather service and the sheriff's department said.
At Red Bud Acres Trailer Park & Campground outside Shelbyville, several mobile homes were destroyed and others damaged.
By Sunday morning, power had been restored to nearly all of the roughly 3,000 Shelby County homes and businesses that lost electricity, said Angeline Protogere, a spokesman for the Plainfield-based Cinergy.
One power line dropped debris on Interstate 74 in Shelby County, closing the highway for about three hours.
