Hate crime stabbing suspects caught
3 juveniles, adult arrested; another sought
By Tom O'Neill
The Cincinnati Enquirer
Cincinnati police Monday arrested one adult and three juveniles and issued a warrant for one other adult all white in what they say was the racially-motivated stabbing and beating of an African-American man near his Northside home early Saturday.
The victim, Theodore Jenkins, 43, was released Sunday from Good Samaritan Hospital, where he was treated for four stab wounds and other injuries. Mr. Jenkins, reached at his home Monday night, declined comment.
Police arrested Calvin Cooper, 21, of Northside, about 5:30 p.m. Monday on a warrant for felonious assault. He was being held Monday night at the Hamilton County Justice Center.
The juveniles, each charged with felonious assault, all live in the Northside area, Cincinnati Police Lt. Kurt Byrd said Monday. He did not know their ages. They were being held in juvenile detention Monday night.
Police issued a felonious-assault warrant for Christina Maria Noel, 22, 5-7, 175, with strawberry blond hair and blue eyes. She's from the Colerain Township area.
Mr. Jenkins was walking home from his job in Camp Washington at 2:30 a.m. Saturday when the group attacked him in the 3900 block of Colerain Avenue, police said. Mr. Jenkins called police from his apartment on Blue Rock Street.
Lt. Byrd said police consider the assault a hate crime, but no motive was apparent other than that Mr. Jenkins told them the group repeatedly used a racial slur during the attack. Sometimes you can't put a motive on stupidity, Lt. Byrd said.
Ohio's hate-crime statute allows prosecutors to pursue tougher charges.
