Mason to vote on top honchos
Mayor, vice mayor come from council ranks
By Earnest Winston
The Cincinnati Enquirer
MASON When the new City Council convenes Saturday for its reorganizational meeting, the first votes will be to select a mayor and vice mayor.
Newcomers Victor Kidd and Tom Grossmann, elected Nov. 6, will be sworn in during the noon meeting in council chambers, 202 W. Main St.
Then the seven-member council will choose a mayor and vice mayor from its ranks to serve two-year terms.
The mayor, who earns $750 per month, is primarily responsible for presiding over twice-a-month council meetings and representing Mason at ceremonial functions. Other council members, including the vice may or, make $500 a month.
Mayor John McCurley and Vice Mayor Jim Fox are seeking to retain their posts, but are facing competition. Council members James Dick Staten and Charlene Pelfrey are competing to become mayor and vice mayor, respectively.
I would like to serve in that position again if that's what my fellow council members would like, Mr. Fox said. I don't know that anything has been determined yet. (But) I believe that John McCurley will continue on as mayor.
Mr. McCurley, who is seeking his second consecutive term as mayor, said he'd like to see the completion of several major projects that started under his administration. They include the community center, which will be shared with the new Mason High School, and the new municipal building.
Mrs. Pelfrey said she wants to become vice mayor in part because she is accessible most days and evenings to attend meetings, conferences and ceremonies; and meet with residents and the administration.
She also said she may seek (the) mayorship in 2003 if re-elected and, although not necessary, the vice mayor office would give me added experience.
Committee assignments could be divvied up as early as Saturday, but are more likely to be done Dec. 10. The second December meeting, which would have been Dec. 24, has been canceled.
Council has several committees, including building, economic development, employee relations, equipment, finance, public works, safety and utility.
Outgoing council members Tom Muennich and Betty Davis were recognized at Monday's council meeting.
Both decided not to run again.
