The Cincinnati Enquirer
The Northern Kentucky University women's soccer team gets a rematch with the University of California at San Diego at 10:30 p.m. today in the NCAA Division II Final Four in San Diego.
NKU met UC San Diego for the NCAA title least year. San Diego won 2-1 on a goal scored with 15 seconds left in the game.
The winner of tonight's semifinal will advance to the championship at 4 p.m. Sunday.
NKU (22-1) is making its third straight trip to the Final Four.
This year's team has been a scoring machine, cranking out 116 goals 88 more than last year's team scored.
The Norse have outscored their three NCAA Tournament opponents 8-1.
Betsy Moore, a two-time first-team All-American, has scored five of the Norse's eight goals in the tournament run. Moore, a senior forward from McAuley High, is NKU's career leader in goals (70) and the school's all-time leading scorer (188 points).
The Norse also have been tough on defense, recording 15 shutouts this year.
In last year's match with UCSD, NKU took a 1-0 lead early in the second half on a goal by Denise Kunz. But UC San Diego tied the score 1-1 when Laura Dooly scored at the 66:15 mark.
Cindy Dostalek won it for UCSD with the goal with 15 seconds remaining.
NKU's program didn't start until 1997. Coach Bob Sheehan, who started the program, is 88-20-5 with the Norse.
Of the 20 players on NKU's roster, 19 are from the Cincinnati area.
