Traffic helicopters no longer grounded
By John Kiesewetter
The Cincinnati Enquirer
For the first time in 12 weeks, airborne traffic reports returned to WLWT-TV (Channel 5) and WUBE-FM (105.1) Friday.
Channel 5, the only Tristate TV station with a helicopter, received a waiver Thursday from the Federal Aviation Administration. The FAA grounded TV-radio flights after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks for national security reasons.
Karen Ehringer returned to the air Friday morning, along with one of the two WUBE-FM traffic twins reporters.
Clear Channel's John Phillips, who reports for nine radio stations and WKRC-TV (Channel 12), received his waiver Friday. He will resume flights Monday.
I'm going to go up this weekend and probably fly for four or five hours just to get used to it, said Mr. Phillips, who pilots an Enstrom 280FX helicopter.
Mr. Phillips, 48, who has done airborne traffic reports for nearly 20 years, has been broadcasting his helicopter traffic reports from the WLW-AM (700) newsroom for 12 weeks. His longest break from flying before this was a two-week vacation, he said.
