The Associated Press
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. Roger Mason Jr. scored 16 of his 22 points in the second half Saturday night to help pull No.9 Virginia back from a 16-point, first-half deficit and the Cavaliers beat Virginia Tech, 68-61.
The Cavaliers (4-0), playing for the first time since their ACC-Big Ten Challenge game against Michigan State was postponed in the second half because of a wet floor, needed the whole second half to win this one.
After trailing the Hokies (4-2) 43-27 at halftime, a Mason-led 20-3 run gave the Cavaliers (4-0) their first lead, 53-51 with 5:59 left.
The Hokies went ahead 59-56 on Carlos Dixon's 3-pointer with 3:34 left, but Chris Williams' putback, Keith Jenifer's drive and Mason's foul-line jumper with 2:13 to go gave Virginia the lead for good.
Dixon and Bryant Matthews led the Hokies with 12 points and Carlton Carter had 10 points and 15 rebounds. Virginia Tech had 27 turnovers.
Williams added 16 points for the Cavaliers, who limited the Hokies to six field goals in 27 tries after halftime. In the first half, the Hokies had made 7-of-10 3-pointers and shot 51.5 percent overall.
The victory was the sixth in a row and 12th in 14 games for Virginia in the series, which dates to 1915.
