Spanish Glitter wires Turfway field
Holiday Inaugural Stakes
The Cincinnati Enquirer
Spanish Glitter, owned by Fred Kissling, lived up to her role as the favorite with a dominating wire-to-wire win in Saturday's $50,000 Holiday Inaugural Stakes at Turfway Park.
The victory was the third on the card for trainer Bernie Flint and second for jockey James Lopez. Both Flint and Lopez lead their respective standings through the first five days of Turfway's holiday meet.
Breaking from post 10, Spanish Glitter went right for the lead and set fractions of :22 and :45 for the first half-mile while being pressured throughout by Overbrook Farm's City Fair. The winner held off that rival, winning the 6-furlong race by a half-length in 1:10 2/5 over a track rated good. Marquesa Jen finished third. Stormin Hanna and Platinum Streak were scratched from the original 12- horse field.
She's an impressive mare, Flint said. She's run hard, she's run often and she's run all over the place. She doesn't need the lead, but from the bad post she needed to get into position.
Spanish Glitter, a 3-year-old Glitterman filly, improved her record to 8-6-1 in 16 career starts and has now earned $345,840. She returned $5.60, $3.20 and $2.60 at odds of 9-to-5.
Live racing continues through April 4. First post is 5:30 p.m. Wednesdays through Fridays and 1:10p.m. Saturdays and Sundays.
