Sports Desk: Power Rankings
Cincinnati Enquirer staff
The top five: 1. John Chaney: For having the guts to rip UC for negative recruiting. It was classic Chaney. He spoke his mind and got off some good lines.
2. Time Warner Cable: For clearing the way to put the St. Xavier-Cleveland St. Ignatius state title game on basic cable. The move allowed all 350,000 subscribers to get the game, rather than just 90,000.
3. Bill Johnson: Remember him? He's the 1984 Olympic downhill skiing champion and one-time bad boy. He's back in the news because he's skiing again eight months after a nasty crash put him in a coma for three weeks.
4. Scott Brosius: He retires before he has to. That's a rare thing in baseball these days.
5. Fisher DeBerry: The Air Force coach suspended 12 players for Saturday's game against Utah for violating curfew. In this age when players don't get suspended for committing real crimes, it's nice to see someone take a stand.
The bottom five
1. Andy Kennedy: Frankly, we didn't know Andy Kennedy was an assistant basketball coach at UC until John Chaney ripped him for faxing the letter in the negative recruiting fiasco. Negative recruiting is never a wise thing to do, but putting it in writing is big-league dumb.
2. Akili Smith: He rips the Bengals for throwing him into the Cleveland game without any practice snaps. Practice snaps are earned. You obviously didn't earn them.
3. Scott Mitchell: A 3.5 quarterback rating against the Browns. Wow. That's hard to do.
4. Jon Kitna: He has been so bad lately that the Bengals got down to their third quarterback.
5. Bob Bratkowski: The Bengals' offensive coordinator calls a roll-out play for Scott Mitchell on fourth-and-goal at the 2. That's like asking Sean Casey to steal home.
