Stoltzman's sure hands make clarinet sparkle

By Janelle Gelfand
The Cincinnati Enquirer

If you wonder whether any 20th-century composers wrote great works for the clarinet, you need only listen to a new CD by Richard Stoltzman.

All three composers on this album — Witold Lutoslawski, Carl Nielsen and Sergei Prokofiev — understood the lyrical and narrative power needed to create a provocative canvas for the solo clarinet.

NEW & NOTED
   RICHARD STOLTZMAN
Lutoslawski, Dance Preludes; Nielsen, Concerto for Clarinet and Orchestra, Op. 57; Prokofiev, Sonata, Op. 94
RCA Victor Red Seal; 4 stars
   CD $16.99; no cassette
Mr. Stoltzman, who grew up in Cincinnati, performs these compelling works with dazzling virtuosity, expressive range and beautiful tone.

Lutoslawski wrote his Dance Preludes in 1954. Although he experiments with rhythms and pungent harmonies, he never abandons lyricism in these charming pieces. Mr. Stoltzman tackles the folk-based movements with seamless phrasing and sparkling wit.

There is real depth to be found in Nielsen's Clarinet Concerto, a fascinating and wide-ranging exploitation of the clarinet's capabilities. Mr. Stoltzman meets its technical challenges with aplomb, while exploring both its brilliant and its disturbingly dark sides.

Prokofiev's Sonata, Op. 94 (originally for flute and piano, expertly scored for clarinet and orchestra by Kent Kennan) is a wonderful find. Although not a true concerto, the orchestral score has colorful touches and Mr. Stoltzman's clarinet solo is witty, engaging and tuneful.

Lawrence Leighton Smith and the Warsaw Philharmonic Orchestra provide sensitive, sure support.

A musical canvas of a different kind graces the CD cover. “Heavenly Clarinet” is by David Lieberman of Wyoming, Mr. Stoltzman's longtime friend and fellow Woodward High School grad.
