Sportswriter, two editors alledgedly vandalized $100,000 sculpture in corporate office

Enquirer news services

WASHINGTON — USA Today fired one sports reporter and two sports editors for scrawling words in what they thought was dust on a $100,000 sculpture near the new offices of Gannett executives in the Virginia suburbs. The substance turned out to be pigment that had not yet been treated with sealant.

Sportswriter Karen Allen and database editor Cheryl Phillips traced the words, “Kilroy was here” and the name of projects editor Denise Tom. Tom is the reporter then-Bengals coach Sam Wyche would not let enter the locker room in 1990.
