Local players on losing end of NCAA soccer final
Santa Clara won its first NCAA women's soccer championship and denied No.1 North Carolina its 17th, beating the Tar Heels 1-0 Sunday on a first-half goal.
Senior All-America defender Danielle Borgman (McAuley) and freshman midfielder Sara Randolph (Sycamore) start for UNC (24-1). Randolph's apparent tying goal with 13 minutes left was negated by an offsides call.
It was UNC's first loss of the season, ending an 11-game winning streak in the NCAA Tournament and a 34-game streak overall.
The Tar Heels have made the national semifinals 20 straight years and they hadn't lost an NCAA tournament game since a 1-0 defeat against Florida in the 1998 final.
Aly Wagner scored four minutes before halftime for the No.2 Broncos (23-2).
