85-year-old loses $6,000 in bank scam
HAMILTON Someone who posed as a bank employee has bilked an 85-year-old Hamilton woman of $6,000.
A lot of scams happen particularly around the holidays when people are susceptible to taking out funds, said Hamilton Police Officer Don Taylor.
Police say the scam artist asked the woman to withdraw money and turn it over for use in a security investigation. He told the victim the money would be redeposited and used as surveillance.
The victim gave the man the cash late Friday afternoon, became suspicious and notified police about 8:30 p.m., Officer Taylor said.
Authorities are warning residents to be wary of anybody asking them to withdraw money and turn it over.
Bank tellers are also being asked to watch for elderly customers who make withdrawals that don't follow their normal habits.
