Four more Ky. Guard units about to get call
The Associated Press
FRANKFORT Four more Kentucky National Guard units have been notified they will be activated and sent off to Europe to help fight the war on terrorism.
The units from London, Somerset, Madisonville and Marion, and Benton will report to their armories for activation in January.
The actual deployment dates to Europe have not been revealed, but once on duty, they will probably stay for six months, according to a release from the state Department of Military Affairs.
The Kentucky Guard units will most likely have the job of providing base security at European installations.
About 1,400 Kentucky National Guard troops have already been activated for what has been named Operation Enduring Freedom. They are now providing a variety of security services, from the Bluegrass Army Depot in Madison County, the Boone National Guard Center in Frankfort and Fort Bragg, N.C.
A unit from Barbourville, which has already been activated and has been on duty at Fort Knox, will also be sent to Europe.
Together, the five units that will be dispatched to Europe number some 400 troops.
The units notified of their likely activation are Company B, 1st Battalion, 149th Infantry, London; Company E, 1st Battalion, 149th Infantry, Somerset; Company B, 2nd Battalion, 123rd Armor, Marion and Madisonville; Company C, 2nd Battalion, 123rd Armor, Benton.
