Yucatan told to keep patrons in line

Nightclub source of recent arrests

By Sarah Buehrle

COVINGTON — The county attorney is taking a look at whether things have gotten out of hand at the Yucatan.

Allegations of what the law calls “disorderly premises” against the Yucatan Liquor Stand downtown will be discussed Monday at a meeting in the Kenton County Attorney's Office.

Kenton County Attorney Garry Edmondson said that the Yucatan Liquor Stand, in Covington's RiverCenter, is the source of 29 recent citations and arrests.

He sent a letter Monday warning Yucatan to curb patrons' disruptive activities, otherwise owners could face possible jail time and lose their liquor license. He said Friday that since the letter, Yucatan owners have been cooperative.

Mr. Edmondson said his office noticed an increase in court activity stemming from the Yucatan and collected the 29 citations and arrests, mostly for disorderly conductand resisting arrest, between Sept. 30 and the end of November.

“All of a sudden they started showing up in arraignment court, coming all from the same place,” Mr. Edmondson said.

“They brought it to us. It was very easy, very obvious.”

Disorderly premises, according to the Kentucky Revised Statute, “consist of permitting patrons to cause public inconvenience, annoyance or alarm, or wantonly creating a risk.”

The Yucatan problems began when the bar started accepting patrons younger than 21, Mr. Edmondson said. Under Kentucky liquor laws, if a percentage of an establishment's sales is from food, the bar can allow people 18 years and older to enter.

“The police tell me that's exactly when it all started,” he said. “Alcohol and children do not mix.”

Lt. Col. Jim Liles of the Covington Police Department said police have been monitoring the area closely since October, and the restaurant owner has cooperated.

“I'm not saying it's not a problem,” Lt. Col. Liles said. “But I don't think it's out of hand, compared to other places in the city.”

He said that other bars in the area have experienced similar problems.

He said that it was too early to gauge the outcome of the allegations against the Yucatan.

Yucatan management could not be reached for comment.
