Answers to killing elude family

Fla. grand jury won't indict man who fired shot

By Lew Moores
The Cincinnati Enquirer

ANDERSON TOWNSHIP — Charles and Alba Pelcha went down to Florida and stayed the week. They got together with some of their son's friends on Tuesday and then spent Wednesday and Thursday sitting in a hallway inside the Broward County courthouse.

Mr. and Mrs. Pelcha, joined on Wednesday by their daughter, Deanna, waited while a Broward County grand jury heard testimony and considered the case against the man who shot and killed their son, Kevin Pelcha, this past July.

By 7:30 p.m. Thursday, the grand jury decided not to indict Nicholas Schneider.

“It's just depressing,” said Mr. Pelcha, who returned Friday from the Fort Lauderdale area. “We didn't expect that (from the grand jury). At the very least I thought it would be manslaughter.”

Kevin Pelcha was 26 when he was shot to death on July 28 during an argument over a traffic dispute with Mr. Schneider, a former North Miami Beach, Fla., police officer, in Pembroke Pines, Fla. Mr. Schneider, 54, works as a civilian with the police department there.

The family said Kevin and a friend, Jeffrey Taleff, had left their Florida townhouse shortly after midnight to go to a Taco Bell. Mr. Taleff stopped his truck briefly in the roadway when Mr. Schneider approached in his vehicle.

Mr. Taleff said Mr. Schneider began screaming at them and waved a gun. Mr. Schneider had said he was attacked by the two men and fired one shot in self-defense.

Since it happened, the family has wanted to know how a traffic dispute turned into a deadly encounter. Mr. Pelcha traveled to Florida in October and talked with people who lived near where the shooting happened.

“We asked if they had talked to anyone in law enforcement and everyone said no,” Mr. Pelcha said.

Kevin played football at Anderson High and graduated from the University of Cincinnati. He moved to Florida two years ago and was working on rehabbing houses.
