Southern Cal 59, Miami 55

The Associated Press

LOS ANGELES — Miami gave Southern California a scare, but the Trojans held on for a 59-55 victory Sunday and gave the RedHawks their third straight loss.

The Trojans (6-2), who got 15 points from Sam Clancy, led by 15 points with eight minutes remaining and appeared to be on their way to a blowout victory in front of 5,115 at the Sports Arena.

But the RedHawks (2-5), who at one point trailed by 18 points, went on a 16-4 run to close to 55-52 with 2:21 remaining. Alex Shorts scored nine points in the spurt despite playing with three fouls.

“We brought them back to us and they had trouble with that,” Miami coach Charlie Coles said. “I thought Alex Shorts did a very good job and matched Clancy stride for stride.”

Shorts finished with 19 points for Miami.

After USC's Brandon Granville missed two free throws, Miami's Juby Johnson missed a 3-pointer that would have tied the game.

“One thing about our team is that we really, really fight. We never give up,” Miami's Juby Johnson said. “We're always the underdogs and sometimes that is best. That makes us fight.”

Chester Mason committed two turnovers in the final minute to finish Miami's upset hopes.
