2 new associate's degrees offered

        COVINGTON — Northern Kentucky Community and Technical College will offer two new associate's degree programs beginning next month.

        The Kentucky Community and Technical College System recently approved degree programs in applied science in information technology and in interdisciplinary early childhood education.

        The spring semester begins Jan. 9. Information: (859) 292-3930.

Nine N.Ky. students win awards in contest

        HIGHLAND HEIGHTS — Nine Northern Kentucky high school students won awards in Northern Kentucky University's high school creative writing contest.

        In the poetry category, the top three winners were Thomas Curran, Tiffany Donnelly and Sara Cole, all of Holmes.

        Sarah Cole of Conner won the fiction first prize, followed by Tiffany Marie Lynn Kersey of Holmes and Jessica Dreyer of Highlands.

        In the essay division, Katie Burcham of Boone County took first place, followed by Sarah Beth Johnson of Ryle and Megan Points of Highlands.

Conner High School teacher honored

        HEBRON — Conner High School business teacher Sue Sorrell is the January winner of the Boone County School District's “Break the Mold” award.

        Ms. Sorrell has taught for 22 years and has served as the school's Future Business Leaders of America faculty adviser. She helped organize the student Cougar Bank and encourages local businesses to offer college scholarships.

Student teaches classes in Mexico

        DANVILLE, Ky. — Lauren Kallmeyer, a Dixie Heights High School graduate, has completed a recent Centre College study-abroad program in Mexico.

        Ms. Kallmeyer was one of 23 Centre students to spend the fall term in Mexico. The group taught classes and coordinated field trips. She is the daughter of Jennifer Kallmeyer of Villa Hills and the late Leonard Kallmeyer.

Boards at Newport, Simon Kenton to meet

        Two local boards will hold meetings Wednesday.

        The Simon Kenton High School Site-Based Decision-Making Council will hold its regular meeting 4-6 p.m. at the school, 11132 Madison Pike. The Newport School Board will meet at 7:30 p.m. at the Central Office Building, 301 E. Eighth St.

Holy Cross boosters plan New Year's dance

        COVINGTON — The Holy Cross High School Athletic Boosters will hold a New Year's Eve dance 9 p.m.-1 a.m. Dec. 31 at the Recreation Hall.

        Cost is $40 per person or $75 per couple. Information: (859) 331-6527.
