Recreation Notes


Basketball league forming

        Registrations are being taken for a Cincinnati Recreation Commission women's basketball league.

        Games are Fridays at Eastern Hills Foreign Language Academy, 6421 Corbly Road in Mount Washington. Cost is $265 per team.

Bird count Sunday

        The National Audubon Bird Count begins at 8 a.m. Sunday at Spring Grove Cemetery, 4521 Spring Grove Ave. in Winton Place.

        The count is part of a nationwide network and will covers various location in western Cincinnati. Cost is $5 to participate, which goes to the Audubon Society to help compile the data.

Players wanted

        FOREST PARK — The Big Blue, a youth soccer program, needs players for its under-10 boys, under-11 boys and under -16 girls teams.

        A tryout will be held Jan. 8 at TriCounty Sportsplex, 530 Northland Blvd. The boys tryout begins at 6 p.m., followed by the girls at 8 p.m.

Walkers welcome

               SHARONVILLE - The American Walkers Association will conduct two activities Sunday at Sharon Woods on U.S. 42.

        A 5-mile walk begins at 9:30 a.m., and a 4-mile stroll begins at 2:30 p.m. There is no charge for either walk.

Clinic for baseball

        COLERAIN TWP. — A youth baseball coaches clinic will be held Jan. 19 at Northwest High School, 10761 Pippin Road.

        Cost is $20 per person. Speakers include former Cincinnati Reds pitcher Chris Welsh and two college baseball coaches, the University of Cincinnati's Brian Cleary and Miami University's Tracy Smith.

Nature is the focus

        SPRINGFIELD TWP. — The Hamilton County Park District will conduct three nature activities next week.

        “Holiday Wildlife” takes place at 2 p.m. Dec. 26-28 at Sharon Woods on U.S. 42. There will be presentations about reptiles, birds and other mammals.

        A “Holiday Scavenger Hunt” takes place at from 1-3 p.m. Dec. 26-28 at Farbach-Werner Nature Preserve on Poole Road in Colerain Township, and “Winter Break” is from 2-4 p.m. Dec. 27-29 at Winton Woods on Winton Road.

        There is no cost for the activities, but a $1 daily or $3 annual vehicle pass is required to enter the parks. Information: 521-7275 or www.greatparks.org.

Golf for seniors

        MASON — Early registrations are being taken for the 2002 Cincy Senior Golf League.

        The 18-hole league begins in April at the Bruin Course at the Kings Island Golf Center. Membership is $35 plus $12 greens fees; the league is limited to 125 players.
