You heard it here first

        • At Beaulieu Vineyard: One of California's oldest wine producers has entered the food business. BV's “Winemaker's Table at Beaulieu Vineyard” includes olive oil, balsamic vinegar, zinfandel-olive tapenade, syrah-apple chipotle glaze, truffles and decadent chocolate sauces made with cabernet sauvignon and port. Prices range $6 to $22. To order, call (800) 264-6918, Ext. 5232 or log on to www.bvwine.com.

Market Scan

Add depth to your holiday mashed potatoes with a grating of celeriac or celery root. The knobby, brown vegetable is cultivated for its root, which tastes like a cross between celery and parsley. Buy relatively small, firm roots with no soft spots. Peel and cook slowly into purees, soups or stews. A classic French bistro salad is grated raw celeriac tossed with remoulade.

Sip It

Reissdorf Kolsch ($3/pint): The authentic German ale I raved about in kegs is available in bottles. Just as good as the draft version — deep golden, sweetly malty up front, with mild hop aroma, low carbonation and low bitterness. Extremely drinkable. German ales are special, and this is one of the best.
