HIGHLAND HEIGHTS — Congress has earmarked $750,000 for Northern Kentucky University to improve science and mathematics education and research.

        The money is part of $1.5 mil lion secured by Sen. Mitch McConnell, R-Kentucky, in the Labor, Health and Human Services and Education budget to be split between NKU and the University of Louisville.

        NKU will use its portion of the money on science equipment, teacher education, undergraduate research and program development for primary, middle and secondary school outreach. The projects are part of the university's Center for Integrative Natural Science and Mathematics (CINSAM).

        NKU spokesman Chris Cole said a bulk of the money will be directed toward summer camps and workshops for Northern Kentucky students in grades K-12. Students will learn to investigate scientific problems and how information translates from one scientific field to another.

        “The earlier you can interest a child in the sciences and mathematics, the better chance they are going to have in keeping that interest in their time throughout school,” Mr. Cole said.

        Mr. Cole said the program is focused on filling a need for more science study in the region, not just at NKU.

        NKU was chosen a recipient of the money because math and science education is their decided program of distinction. When Mr. McConnell's office takes requests for funding every year, they ask universities to pick a field of concentration.

        At U of L, money will be used for graduate and post-graduate research and teacher development.

        The money is part of $35 million Mr. McConnell has secured this year for research and development at Kentucky universities.
