PITTSBURGH — A teary-eyed Jaromir Jagr was held to an assist in his Pittsburgh return, and defensemen Darius Kasparaitis and Andrew Ference scored 1:12 apart as the Penguins held on for a 4-3 victory over Washington on Friday night.

Jagr couldn't convert a couple of good scoring chances on what clearly was an emotional night before setting up Peter Bondra's third-period goal.

The Penguins led 4-1 before Bondra and Sergei Gonchar scored power-play goals slightly less than three minutes apart midway through the period.

Jagr, the second-best player in Penguins history to Mario Lemieux, was booed whenever he touched the puck in the first period, only to receive a loud standing ovation after a video tribute to him.

Toby Petersen scored with three seconds left in the second period for the Penguins.

Chris Simon scored 8:10 into the second period for Pittsburgh.

        Islanders 2, Rangers 1

NEW YORK — Mats Lindgren and Michael Peca scored first-period goals to lead the New York Islanders past the New York Rangers.

The victory moved the Islanders into a tie for first place in the Atlantic Division with the Rangers. Both teams have 43 points.

Eric Lindros returned to the Rangers' lineup after missing three games with a sprained knee and tied the game at 1 at 2:32 of the first.

Islanders goalie Chris Osgood and Rangers goaltender Mike Richter each finished with 28 saves.

        Maple Leafs 3, Sabres 3

BUFFALO, N.Y. — Slava Kozlov scored the final goal with 6:15 left and had two assists to help Buffalo tie Toronto.

Kozlov knocked in the rebound of Jason Woolley's shot on a power play to tie the game.

Robert Reichal, Jyrki Lumme and Darcy Tucker scored for Toronto.

Maxim Afinogenov and Tim Connolly also scored for Buffalo.

Northeast Division-leading Toronto earned a point for the sixth time in seven games, while last-place Buffalo ended a two-game losing streak.

Buffalo goalie Mika Noronen made 30 saves, and Toronto's Curtis Joseph had 25.

        Hurricanes 5, Thrashers 4, OT

RALEIGH, N.C. — Rookie Erik Cole completed his first three-goal game with the overtime winner, leading Carolina past Atlanta.

Cole beat Milan Hnilicka to the glove side with 3:32 left after Rod Brind'Amour took a shot off a faceoff.

Martin Gelinas also scored for Carolina, which has won five of seven after winning just two of its previous 12. Brind'Amour had a goal and three assists.

Atlanta lost for the ninth time in 13 games and has just four wins in its last 26.

Andreas Karlsson, Hnat Domenichelli and Darcy Hordichuk scored for Atlanta. The Thrashers' Lubos Bartecko forced overtime with 2:08 left.

        Red Wings 3, Sharks 0

DETROIT — Dominik Hasek stopped 19 shots for his second shutout of the season and Steve Yzerman had a goal and an assist as Detroit snapped San Jose's 10-game unbeaten streak.

Kris Draper and Brett Hull also scored for Detriot, which raised its league-best record to 25-8-2-1. San Jose (18-8-5-3) was 9-0-1 in its previous 10 games.

        Lightning 4, Blues 3 OT

TAMPA, Fla. — Vincent Lecavalier scored two goals, including the game-winner 3:29 into overtime, to lead Tampa Bay past St. Louis.

Fredrik Modin added two goals, including a game-tying score late in the third period, for the Lightning.

Tampa Bay tied a franchise-record with its sixth straight home win.

Scott Mellanby, Bryce Salvador and Cory Stillman scored for St. Louis, which has just one win (1-7-3-1) in it last 12 road games.

        Mighty Ducks 2, Coyotes 1

ANAHEIM, Calif. — Paul Kariya and Matt Cullen scored first-period goals and Jean-Sebastien Giguere made 30 saves to lead Anaheim past Phoenix.

Shane Doan scored for Phoenix, 0-7-2 in its last nine road games. It was the first time this season that the Coyotes have lost a one-goal decision in regulation.

        Flames 2, Avalanche 2

DENVER — Rob Niedermayer scored on a rebound at 17:38 of the third period, lifting Calgary into a tie with Colorado.

Rob Blake had given Colorado a 2-1 lead with a power-play goal at 14:38 of the final period.

Patrick Roy, seeking his 499th career win, had 25 saves. Calgary's Roman Turek stopped 32.

Calgary's Clarke Wilm scored in the first period.

Pascal Trepanier scored a power-play goal in the second period for the Avalanche.

        Blackhawks 5, Oilers 1

CHICAGO — Igor Korolev scored twice and Phil Housley added a goal and an assist as Chicago extended its winning streak to three games with a victory over Edmonton.

Alex Zhamnov and Jon Klemm scored power-play goals in a 41-second span of the second period for Chicago. Jocelyn Thibault made 21 saves.

The victory vaulted Chicago past Edmonton and into second place in the Western Conference. The Blackhawks are 7-2-1 in their last 10 games.

Ethan Moreau scored for Edmonton, which is winless in its last three (0-2-1).
