U of L, Pitino bask in glow of win over Vols
Enquirer news services
LOUISVILLE Rick Pitino's Cardinals are 7-1 after their remarkable comeback Thursday night that led to a 73-72 victory over Tennessee.
Louisville, trailing by six points with 36 seconds left, hit three 3-pointers in the final 31.7 seconds.
Afterward, Pitino reminisced about his days at Kentucky, when his teams had similar types of comebacks against LSU (a 31-point deficit in the second half) in 1994 and Arkansas (down nine inside the last minute of overtime).
I've witnessed so many of these types of endeavors, yet I don't know what to say, Pitino said. These guys have hearts of lions. I don't believe it myself.
Tennessee had a last chance with 1.8 seconds remaining. A length-of-the-court pass landed in Marcus Haislip's hands on the right baseline, but his bank shot from 12 feet dribbled off the left side of the rim.
And unlike the 104-103 loss to Duke that he suffered while at Kentucky, Pitino chose to put a man on the inbounds passer.
See what I learn? Pitino said.
