3 lanes necessitate turn arrow
By Walt Schaefer
The Cincinnati Enquirer
QUESTION: When heading northbound on Hamilton Avenue (Ohio 127) at the Ronald Reagan Highway interchange, there is a left turn on arrow only to go westbound on Ronald Reagan. Why is there not a continuous left turn when the light is green? Visibility there is fine. - James Moeller North, College Hill
ANSWER: Kim Patton, spokeswoman for the Ohio Department of Transportation said southbound traffic on U.S. 127 (Hamilton Avenue) has three lanes of traffic at the intersection. Two lanes go straight and the third lane is a right turn lane onto Ohio 126 (Ronald Reagan Highway).
Traffic engineers said it is dangerous to cross three lanes of traffic to make a left turn onto the Ronald Reagan Highway. Therefore, the restriction will not be changed.
ODOT has placed the intersection on a list for a new traffic count to see if conditions have changed to warrant reviewing signalization.
Q: The Ohio 125 (Beechmont Avenue) exit off northbound Interstate 275 has three lanes. The middle lane only goes right. Why not change it to allow motorists to turn left or right? At the southbound exit, the middle lane allows left or right turns. - Debra Trabka, Amelia
A: Mrs. Patton said the southbound Ohio 125 (Beechmont Avenue) exit from I-275 allows traffic to turn both directions from the middle lane because traffic counts indicate there are twice as many cars turning right than left.
Traffic counts and turn direction statistics for northbound I-275 are not sufficient to permit center lane motorists to turn right or left, she said.
Q: Motorists traveling eastbound on Ohio 747 at Hamilton-Mason Road at rush hour are having considerable difficulty making a left turn onto southbound Ohio 747 because of increasing traffic heading westbound on Hamilton-Mason Road. Are there any plans to add a left turn green arrow at this location? - Don Leibrock, Liberty Township
A: ODOT will target this intersection for a traffic study to determine if turn arrows are warranted, Mrs. Patton said. The study will be conducted after the first of the year.
