Americans experienced a renewal of patriotism after the attacks of Sept. 11. Amid all the responses to the threat of terrorists, greeting card companies began making patriotic Christmas cards for this season.
Patriotic cards, sent in previous wars, have become part of the nation's heritage. Treasured cards fill family scrapbooks. Art lovers keep them for their rare beauty. Collectors find them fascinating fragments of history.
The Enquirer asked readers to send copies of greeting cards from previous times of war. They sent in 78 of them, some of them with accompanying stories. These are some of those stories.
From Henry Strecker - WWII
Awarded the Purple Heart, Bronze Stare and five battle stars, to his family
From Howard Ling - WWII
To then 4-year-old daughter, Flora
From Shane Hardin - Desert Storm
To Villa Hills Day Care class
