RALEIGH, N.C. — Martin Gelinas scored twice over the final 7 1/2 minutes as the Carolina Hurricanes rallied to beat the Toronto Maple Leafs 4-3 in a battle of division leaders Wednesday night.

It was a wild ending to a game that was sluggish most of the way as Toronto, with the most points in the Eastern Conference, saw its four-game road unbeaten streak snapped.

Gelinas and Bates Battaglia scored power-play goals in a span of 3:21 to give the Hurricanes a 3-2 lead with 4:09 left. But Toronto captain Mats Sundin, severely cut near his right eye in the first period, scored his second of the game 28 seconds later to tie it.

Gelinas took a centering pass from Joseph Vasicek 24 seconds later for the game-winner, beating a stunned Curtis Joseph with 3:17 left.

Jeff O'Neill also scored for Carolina, while Mikael Renberg had Toronto's other goal.

        Flyers 4, Capitals 1

WASHINGTON — Ruslan Fedotenko scored two goals, and Dan McGillis had a goal and an assist as Philadelphia completed a perfect season against Washington.

The Flyers won all four regular-season games against the Capitals by a combined score of 18-4.

Philadelphia dominated play throughout and held a 31-23 shots advantage. The Capitals tested goalie Roman Cechmanek several times early, but couldn't score until Stephen Peat got his first career goal with 4:49 left. Cechmanek finished with 22 saves.

Keith Primeau also scored for Philadelphia, and Simon Gagne added two assists as the Flyers stretched the Capitals' winless streak to four.

        Sabres 3, Canadiens 1

BUFFALO, N.Y. — Curtis Brown scored the go-ahead goal with 5:10 left, and Mika Noronen made 15 saves as Buffalo beat Montreal.

Buffalo snapped a four-game winless streak, while Montreal dropped to 4-7-2 in December.

Brown scored the decisive goal from high in the slot, firing a shot past Jose Theodore's stick. Brown added his eighth goal into an empty net with half a second left.

Arron Asham tied it at 1 on an odd-man rush with Richard Zednik, slipping the puck under Noronen's right arm at 7:30 of the second period.

        J. P. Dumont gave Buffalo a 1-0 lead at 8:58 of the first.

        Bruins 3, Senators 2

BOSTON — Jozef Stumpel scored the game-winning goal midway through the third period, and John Grahame made 34 saves to lift Boston over Ottawa.

Stumpel converted a pass from Scott Pellerin at 10:28 of the final period, flicking the puck through a screen and beating Jani Hurme. The win was the third straight for the Bruins.

The Senators erased a 2-0 third-period deficit when Andre Roy and Todd White scored in a span of 1:35.

Rob Zamuner and Brian Rolston also scored for Boston.

        Devils 4, Penguins 0

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — Brian Rafalski and Pierre Dagenais each had a goal and an assist in a big second period that lifted New Jersey over Pittsburgh.

Bobby Holik and Jason Arnott also scored, and John Madden had two assists in the four-goal period during which the Devils took 21 of their 41 shots.

Martin Brodeur had 20 saves to earn his second shutout of the season and 53rd career.

        Blackhawks 3, Blues 1

ST. LOUIS — Tony Amonte's power-play goal snapped a third-period tie, and Chicago beat St. Louis.

Amonte scored his 13th goal and first in six games at 1:16. With Pavol Demitra off for holding, Amonte converted a tap-in from in front of the net off a feed from Steve Sullivan.

Mark Bell added an insurance goal, and Mike Peluso scored the first goal for the Blackhawks, who have won four of five.

Daniel Corso, who was a healthy scratch for six of the Blues' previous eight games, scored for St. Louis.

        Mighty Ducks 2, Sharks 1

SAN JOSE, Calif. — Matt Cullen scored early in the third period, and Jeff Friesen had two assists as Anaheim beat San Jose.

Mike Leclerc also scored to help the Mighty Ducks end a six-game losing streak to San Jose and win for the fourth time in their last five games.

Scott Thornton scored for the Sharks, who had a four-game home unbeaten streak stopped.

Steve Shields, making just his second start in nine games, made 27 saves — 15 in the third period — in earning his first victory since Dec. 2. San Jose's Evgeni Nabokov made 25 saves in losing for just the second time since Nov. 27.

        Oilers 3, Flames 2

EDMONTON, Alberta — Eric Brewer scored a power-play goal with less than five minutes remaining as Edmonton rallied for a victory over Calgary.

After the Oilers killed off Mike Comrie's tripping penalty, Calgary's Scott Nichol went to the box for interference at 14:53 of the third. Edmonton won the ensuing faceoff, Janne Niinimaa skated back to the point and sent the puck cross-ice to Brewer, who one-timed a shot past Roman Turek.

Josh Green and Comrie also scored for the Oilers, who snapped a three-game winless skid (0-2-1). Niinimaa and Anson Carter each had two assists.

Jarome Iginla and Marc Savard scored for the Flames, winless in four (0-3-1) and 2-6-2 in the last 10.

        Panthers 3, Thrashers 3

ATLANTA — Olli Jokinen scored with 1:27 left in regulation to cap a three-goal third period as Florida rallied to tie Atlanta.

Jokinen's goal, from a scramble in front, kept the Thrashers winless at home since Nov. 19.

Kevyn Adams and Dan Boyle also scored for the Panthers, who outshot the Thrashers 41-15.

Todd Reirden, Jeff Cowan and Dany Heatley all scored for Atlanta, which blew a 3-0 lead.

        Kings 1, Coyotes 1

PHOENIX — Jason Allison scored with 3:25 left in regulation, lifting Los Angeles into a tie with Phoenix.

Kings goalie Felix Potvin made 25 saves as the Kings went to overtime against Phoenix for the second time this season. The teams tied 2-2 in the season opener in Los Angeles.

Phoenix's Shane Doan broke a scoreless tie early in the third period.

        Avalanche 2, Stars 0

DALLAS — Patrick Roy earned his 500th victory in style.

On the night he became the first NHL goalie to reach that milestone, Roy recorded his seventh shutout of the season, tying his career best, to lead Colorado past Dallas.

Roy, who's had the most career wins by a goalie since No. 448, made several great stops among his 31 saves, including three superb ones in a row late in the third period. He also was helped by two shots that hit the crossbar.

Goals from Alex Tanguay and Milan Hejduk helped Colorado to its fifth straight road win. The Avalanche are unbeaten in seven straight on the road and are 12-1-3 in 16 games.

        Wild 3, Red Wings 3

ST. PAUL, Minn. — Luc Robitaille scored an unassisted goal late in the third period to lift Detroit into a 3-3 tie with Minnesota and extend the Red Wings' unbeaten string to four games.

Detroit survived a Minnesota power play in overtime after Brendan Shanahan was called for hooking. Minnesota managed just one shot during the man advantage.

Detroit's other goals were scored by Steve Yzerman, who left the game midway through the second period after being hit on the left ankle by a shot by Jason Marshall. Yzerman blocked the shot, then limped to the bench in obvious pain. He was taken for X-rays at the Wild's on-site medical facility.

Willie Mitchell, Jason Marshall and Richard Park scored for Minnesota.

        Lightning 1, Predators 0

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Kevin Weekes stopped 31 shots, and Fredrik Modin scored the game's only goal as the Tampa Bay beat Nashville.

Weekes, the backup to Nikolai Khabibulin, earned his second shutout in only 10 games this season and eighth career. The Lightning are tied with Colorado for the NHL lead with seven shutouts this season.

Modin, stationed near the right goal post, scored 7:35 into the third period when he put in a deflection of a shot by Brad Richards that bounced off the right skate of goalie Mike Dunham.

Nashville had its franchise-record home unbeaten streak snapped at 11 games. The Predators were also unbeaten in seven games overall.
