Today's bowls: Insight.com, Alamo
Enquirer staff and news services
Syracuse started the season 0-2, and Kansas State went 2-4. Both bounced back, though, to earn berths in today's Insight.com Bowl.
The similarities don't end there. Both emphasize defense. Neither passes very well. Both rely on runners who topped 1,000 yards this season James Mungro of Syracuse and Josh Scobey of Kansas State.
We're in the I-formation, they're in the I-formation, Syracuse coach Paul Pasqualoni said. They'll jump into the shotgun. We'll jump into the shotgun. They like to play man-to-man, and we like to play man-to-man on defense. We probably have the same style of players in similar positions.
ALAMO BOWL:
Texas Tech coach Mike Leach tried all season to hype his quarterback as one of the best in the nation.
Few outside of the Big 12 noticed.
That may change today. A good game against Iowa in the Alamo Bowl could launch the start of a Kliff Kingsbury-for-Heisman campaign in 2002.
While 2001 Heisman Trophy winner Eric Crouch of Nebraska and Texas' Chris Simms grabbed most of the attention in the Big 12 this season, Kingsbury quietly passed for a league-high 3,502 yards, nearly 1,000 more than Simms, and 25 touchdowns. His 50 career TD passes are a school record.
