According to Webster's, being resolute means having or showing a fixed, firm purpose, determined and unwavering.
When I asked some Greater Cincinnatians if they had a New Year's resolution regarding personal fitness, I found their responses inspiring, hopeful, patriotic and resolute. Perhaps you'll join this group and ponder your fitness goals and enjoy a healthy and happy new year.
Cincinnati Mayor Charlie Luken: I want to get over to the Cincinnati Athletic Club five times a week, do my Nautilus and aerobics and run in the Heart Mini-Marathon. (in March).
Cincinnati Vice Mayor Alicia Reece: I roller skate once a week, but I want to skate twice a week. I'm also looking forward to working out at least two days per week, which will give me four days of exercising. I got off track during the campaign and wasn't doing as much. And I'm going to try to cut back on the bread I love rolls and donuts.
Jerry Carroll, owner and developer of the Kentucky Speedway: Coming out of my worst fitness year ever, I've taken more of an awareness toward fitness and getting back into shape and watching the diet . . . Having very high cholesterol and trying to corral that, I think this is the year where I'm really going to take time to eat right . . . I also have another resolution . . . I'm going to run a mile a day so at the end of the year I'll be 365 miles out of town.
Bill Cunningham, WLW radio talk-show host: I'm going to eat less Graeter's ice cream, I'm going to eat less chili, less Big Boy's, less hot-fudge cakes. I'm going to eat more carrots and celery, and exercise like a great American.
A.G. Lafley, Procter & Gamble president and chief executive officer: I want to go from three exercise sessions to five exercise sessions per week (45 minutes or an hour each). I want to get a good mix of things I like to do, like bicycling, and things I feel I ought to do, like work out in the gym. I'm not sure yet whether I'm going to count walking the dog as exercise.
John Lomax, Channel 12 anchor/reporter: I've got two fitness goals. One is included in the other. I want to lose 15 pounds, that's the overall goal. What I'm going to do is revise my diet. I've made some changes already, but I want to revise it even more to eliminate more red meat and to eat more vegetables and increase my workout routine.
Dick LeBeau, Cincinnati Bengals head coach: My goal is to be able to make a physical fitness goal for the year 2003.
As for me, my two tries at walking the Flying Pig Marathon (26.2 miles) have gotten me to Mile 14. This year, I'm going to actually train for it. Hope to see you at the finish line.
Year in Tempo: Then and now
