Recreation Notes


Walks planned at Lunken

        The Cincinnati chapter of the American Walkers Association will hold two events Sunday at Lunken Airport Playfield on Wilmer Avenue.

        A six-mile walk begins at 9:30 a.m., followed by a four-mile at 2:30 p.m. Both are free. Pets are not allowed.

Nature programs

        The Cincinnati Parks Department's “Walk-Look-Listen Club” for older adults will meet 1-3 p.m. Saturday at Avon Woods Nature Center in North Avondale.

        Bird and wildflower walks are among the activities. New members may join for $3 per year.

Exercise class

        SPRINGDALE — Registrations are being taken for a Pilates exercise class at the Springdale Community Center on Lawnview Avenue.

        The class, which begins Jan. 8, stresses conditioning by stabilizing the pelvis and improves posture and spinal alignment. Cost is $60 for the six-week session, but walk-ins may participate for $15 per week.

Bird watchers' hike

        SHARONVILLE — The Hamilton County Park District's Early Bird Special takes place at 10 a.m. Saturday at Sharon Woods on U.S. 42.

        Participants will search for birds that stay in the Tristate for the winter. Hikers should meet at the Sharon Centre.

        The hike is free, but a $1 daily or $3 annual vehicle pass is required to enter the park. Information: 521-7275 or Web site www.greatparks.com.
Karate class

        SPRINGDALE — A twice-weekly Kami Yama Karate class meets at the Springdale Community Center on Lawnview Avenue.

        Cost is $40 per month for adults and $30 per month for children ages 10-17. Infor mation: 478-8800.
Park hike

        MIAMI TOWNSHIP — A 1.5-mile hike begins at 2 p.m. Saturday at Shawnee Lookout Park on Miamiview Road.

        Hikers may uncover remnants of prehistoric Indian tribes, including the Hopewell and Adena. Participants should meet at the Miami Fort Trail.

        There is no cost for the hike, but the Hamilton County Park District requires purchase of a $1 daily or $3 annual vehicle pass to enter the park.

Golf program

        The American Lung Association's Golf Ohio Membership program has begun.

        Cost is $35. The program allows golfers to play free or reduced-price rounds at 166 courses and driving ranges throughout the state. Courses and ranges include Anderson Township Practice Range, Circling Hills Golf Course in Harrison, The Golf Ranch at Tri-County, Wild wood Country Club in Fairfield, Joe Nuxhall's Driving Range in Fairfield, Franklin Golf Course and Harmon Golf Course in Lebanon.

Race registrations

        Registrations are being taken for the 2002 Heart Mini-Marathon.

        The race takes place March 24 in downtown Cincinnati. Besides the 15-kilometer run, there is a 10-K walk, a 5-K run and a 2-K MiniMaraFun run for children.

        Cost is $30 for the adult events before March 11, $35 afterward and $25 for the children's event. Information: 281-4048 or www.heartmini.org.
Basketball league

        MASON — The Mason Parks and Recreation Department is taking registrations until Jan. 15 for a Tuesday night 3-on-3 adult basketball league.

        Games begin Jan. 29 at the old gym at Mason High School. Cost is $75 per team (which may have up to six players on the roster) or $15 per person. Rosters and fees may be brought or mailed to: Mason Parks and Recreation Office, 690 Mason-Montgomery Road, Mason 45040.

Tae kwon do class

        MASON — A series of tae kwon do classes is being held Tuesdays and Thursdays Jan 8 through Feb. 7 at the Tory Center at Grace Baptist Church, 5595 Mason Road.

        Beginners meet from 5:30-6:30 p.m., followed by intermediates from 6:30-7:30 p.m. and advance from 7:30-8:30 p.m.

        Pre-registration is required. Cost is $30 for Mason residents and $45 for nonresidents, plus at least $50 for a uniform for those who do not already have one.

Defense training

        FAIRFIELD — Registrations are being taken for a Fairfield Parks and Recreation Department self-defense class.

        The class will be held from 5:30-9 p.m. Jan. 29 and 31, Feb. 5 and 7 at the Fairfield Golf and Community Center, 2200 John Gray Road. Cost is $25 per person.

Football skills

        LEBANON — A Lebanon boy has won his division at a recent Punt, Pass and Kick competition.

        Alex Arovitz, 9, won the 9-year-old division at the Cincinnati Bengals team championship.
Youth leagues

        MASON — Sign-ups for Mason Youth Organization baseball and softball leagues takes place from 9 a.m. ot 1 p.m. Jan. 12 at St. Susanna Church, 305 Fourth Ave.

        There are five programs: T-ball for girls age 5 and boys age 5-6; minor league baseball for boys ages 7-8; major league baseball for boys age 9-17; slow-pitch softball for girls 9-17; and fast-pitch for girls 12-14 and high school.
