Some Good News

Business profits donated

Tristaters have kept up generous donations to Sept. 11 relief funds, while also helping worthy causes at home.

Clay Morehead, president of Laser Web, a Laser Tag center in Fairfield, said he became concerned that disaster relief diverted local donations from here to New York.

“Of course, this was a worthy cause and I supported it,” Mr. Morehead said. “But I became concerned about agencies suffering here because the donations had fallen off. We had heard that the United Way campaign might fall off 50 percent.”

Mr. Morehead decided to donate a day's profit to the United Way Campaign.

He set aside Dec. 15. That day's profit totaled $5,150 for the United Way Campaign.

“We felt this was something we had to do to show support for the local agencies,” Mr. Morehead said.

Computer Renaissance, 9281 Governor's Way, Symmes Township, collected 800 pounds of food and other items, including diapers and baby food, in its two-month effort as a drop-off point for the FreeStore/FoodBank.

“There are a lot of things we can do to give something back to our community,” said Buddy Goose, owner. “In light of the Sept. 11 tragedy, I thought there would be a lot of local organizations suffering. We truly thank our customers and others who stopped by to make a donation. We were impressed with the number of items given.”

Patrick O'Brien of West Chester and his two children, Megan, 8, and Sean, 4, helped make Christmas for residents of the Drop-Inn Shelter House.

After hearing that the center was suffering a shortfall in food and financial contributions, Mr. O'Brien contacted Pat Clifford, general coordinator.

They purchased 68 pounds of ham, 60 pounds of vegetables and boxes of cookies. Mr. O'Brien also gave the center a check.

“His contribution really helped out,” said Mr. Clifford. “As we get more people, we have to serve three meals a day. We could always use food donations.”
