Perfect Drift wins Turfway Prevue
The Cincinnati Enquirer
Favorite Perfect Drift fulfilled the hopes of his connections Saturday with a four-length victory over World Champion in the $50,000 Turfway Prevue Stakes. The race was the Northern Kentucky track's first in a series for Kentucky Derby-aged 3-year-olds that culminates with the Lane's End Spiral Stakes on March 23.
Ridden by Tony D'Amico, Perfect Drift raced in
sixth position for a half-mile before overtaking pacesetter World Champion drawing off in the stretch to win the 6 1/4-furlong race in 1:18.15 over a fast track. Thunder On Land rallied for third and Frankie R's Winner, who flattened out late after stalking the pace, was fourth.
Spicey Marcloud, Getem Frank and Private Horde completed the order of finish. L X Express, Saint Golddigger and Career Best were scratched.
We were hoping that he'd win, but you never know, said owner Dr. William A. Reed of Stonecrest Farm. He's still learning. We're very excited about him. He'll either stay here or go to Hot Springs (Oaklawn Park). That's in (trainer) Murray's (Johnson) hands.
The best place for him to get experience is right here, Johnson said. The track was perfect today. All I said to Tony was to ride him like he's the best horse, and he was. Tony knows how we do things, and he knows Turfway.
With his second victory in three career starts, the Dynaformer colt, bred in Kentucky by his owner, improved his bankroll to $50,860. He returned $7.00, $3.80 and $2.80 as the 5-to-2 favorite.
The next race in Turfway's 3-year-old series is the $50,000 WEBN Frog Stakes Feb.2.
