Some Good News

Churches help aid refugees

map
Sweaters for children and adults, sweat suits, gloves and mittens, and insulated flannel shirts are needed for 3 million refugees camped near the Pakistan-Afghanistan border.

Three local churches have joined a nationwide drive to collect the clothing by the end of this month.

Robert Terwillegar, a member of the Mission Committee at Milford First Methodist Church, 541 Main St., said his church is acting as a collection point for the drive. Others are; Bethel Methodist Church, 402 W. Plane, and Westwood Methodist Church, 3460 Epworth Ave.

“We started a week ago,” Mr. Terwillegar said. “Right now we have a small pile of clothing.”

He said the churches received a letter from the U.S. State Department concerning the need for clothing.

“It is important that people only send the kind of clothing that is requested,” Mr. Terwillegar said. “And the State Department is requesting all new clothing. Any clothing sent has to be fumigated to prevent taking any kind of diseases into that country.”

Clothing can be brought to the three churches. Churches that want to join the drive may call Milford Methodist at 831-5500.

The local collections will run through Jan. 23.

“We will package the clothing and rent a truck to drive the package to the Midwest Mission Distribution Center in Chatham, Ill.,” Mr. Terwillegar said. The State Department will fly the clothing from the center.
       • • • Seventh-graders at Immaculate Heart of Mary School, Anderson Township, mixed in a little hard labor in their science and service project.

The 73 students of the class, led by science teacher Donna Esposito, conducted a cleanup day for the Sisters of Divine Providence in Melbourne, Ky.

Ms. Esposito assigned the students to specific areas of the 200-acre site.

The work was devoted to the greenhouse gardens, hillside and cemetery. Students also raked and disposed of leaves and spread mulch.

“This involved a lot of work,” Ms. Esposito said. She said one of the highlights of their work was a “bucket brigade” that replenished wood chips on the grounds pathways.

“I have made it my pet project to go help the sisters each year,” Ms. Esposito said. “They don't have enough people power at the convent to do the work. The students do work that might not get done.”

The students toured the newly spruced-up site, including an afternoon tour of St. Anne Convent, the Holy Family Home for retired sisters and the Moye Spiritual Life Center.

Ms. Esposito has been a science teacher for 8 1/2 years and has conducted science service projects for seven years.
