WHO'S HOT
Skip Prosser Wake Forest has won seven of its last eight and handed North Carolina its worst loss ever in the Dean Dome. Prosser's team is sixth in the RPI. He gets his first shot at his former boss, Pete Gillen, when Wake meets Virginia on Tuesday. Drew Gooden Kansas' junior forward has had seven consecutive double-doubles and helped the Jayhawks reach No. 1 for the first time in nearly four years. He leads the nation in rebounding (12.4 avg.) and averages 20.6 points; Kansas has won 13 straight games. Georgia The Bulldogs broke a 16-game losing streak to Kentucky, winning in Lexington, where they had previously gone 2-50. Georgia is now ranked 13-2 and stands fifth in the RPI. Anybody miss Tubby Smith now? WHO'S NOT Pete Gillen After a 9-0 start, Virginia has lost back-to-back games to North Carolina State and Clemson. Now it must win today at North Carolina (noon, ESPN) to break a free fall before Gillen gets the no-win situation Tuesday facing his former pupil, Skip Prosser. Kentucky Four losses, two at home. An 0-2 start in the SEC for the first time since 1979, when none of the current Wildcats were born. The questionable ethics of refusing to grant Marvin Stone his release. A (si) Sports Illustrated (ei) story ripping the fans. Ugggggggggly. Missouri This team was No. 2 and unbeaten on Dec. 15. Now it has lost four of its last six including a defeat at 8-7 Iowa State and stands 61st in the RPI. Welcome to Saint Joseph's-type bust territory.
MUST-SEE TV Keep an eye on these games in the upcoming week:
Kentucky at South Carolina, 1 p.m. today (Ch. 64): Does the sky keep falling for UK? The Gamecocks (10-4) are tough at home.
Indiana at Iowa, 1 p.m. Sunday (Ch. 12): You see, Steve Alford used to play at Indiana, and now he's coaching Iowa, and ... you get the point.
Texas at Texas Tech, 9 p.m. Monday (ESPN): If Bob Knight's Red Raiders (13-1) win today at Oklahoma, they'll likely be ranked entering this bragging-rights battle.
Iowa at Illinois, 9 p.m. Tuesday (ESPN): Yeah, more Alford. But hey, it's a matchup of two Top 15 teams.
Xavier at George Washington, 7:30 p.m. Thursday (Fox Sports Net): A chance for XU to seize early control of the A-10 West.
Maryland at Duke, 9 p.m. Thursday (ESPN): Maybe the best game of the season thus far. Wanna bet Dickie V. is courtside?
