OXFORD — Miami's Doug Davis said all he needed was his second wind.

His first wind earned him a spot on the bench after coach Charlie Coles was dissatisfied with what he saw from the senior guard defensively on Eastern Michigan's Ricky Cottrill in Miami's 72-56 victory Wednesday.

Davis couldn't stop the conference's third-leading scorer (19.9 ppg), allowing him 14 first-half points as Eastern Michigan hung in the game.

“(Cottrill) runs around so much, around so many screens, you never know where he is going,” Davis said. “I couldn't believe how hard he worked to get open and what they set up to get him shots.”

With his second wind in the second half, Davis limited Cottrill to three points as Miami improved to 7-9 (4-1 in the Mid-American Conference), and won its fourth straight game.

Cottrill shot just 6-of-20 from the floor after Davis' early lapses.

“In the second half, I really fought through every screen and tried to limit his touches,” Davis said. “Everybody helped, and it made the difference.”

Two second-half scoring runs turned a 31-27 Miami lead into an easy victory. With four minutes gone and the game tied, Miami went on an 11-0 burst to give itself a comfortable cushion.

Reserve Eugene Seals started the run with a three-point play and then a transition dunk.

The Eagles closed the gap to six with 9:53 remaining; the RedHawks then went on a 16-3 run over the next five minutes to close out Eastern Michigan (5-12, 1-5).

“Miami did an excellent job in the second half taking us out of what we wanted to do,” EMU coach Jim Boone said. “We were never able to do that, and they just kept scoring while we couldn't.”

Davis led Miami with a game-high 20 points on 6-of-11 shooting.

“I have been after him,” Coles said of Davis. “The last four games he has really given us a boost. He has made a difference (in the winning streak).”
