Three dead in separate shootings in Dayton

Two young men found shot, killed in two parked cars; another shot during chase

DAYTON, Ohio — Two young men were shot and killed in two cars parked near each other at an intersection, police said.

And another man was killed in a separate shooting early Saturday, police said.

The first shooting occurred around 9 p.m. Friday night in the city's Edgemont neighborhood, police Lt. Mark Hess said. Police were searching for a vehicle that witnesses saw leaving the shooting.

At least two types of guns were used. Lt. Hess said one was a 9mm pistol, and an automatic weapon likely was used because of the number of shell casings found at the scene.

Both cars were riddled with bullet holes, and the windows of both vehicles were blown out.

The victims were identified Saturday as Laron Valentine, 17, and Thomas McGuire Jr., 21, according to the Montgomery County coroner's office. Their hometowns were not available.

The second shooting involved a car chase that led to the death of Anthony Prego, 21, hometown unknown, the coroner's office said. No arrests have been made.

“We have two people we are interviewing, one of whom may be a potential suspect,” Sgt. Gary White said Saturday.

Following the chase, both vehicles went out of control at a railroad crossing and ended in a field, police said. Mr. Prego was wounded in his head and neck, authorities said. It is not clear when he was shot, they said.

        Police recovered a handgun.
