Trial in UK student's '94 slaying postponed

The Associated Press

LEXINGTON — On July 17, 1994, a bullet shattered the left temple of University of Kentucky football player Trent DiGiuro, killing him instantly as he celebrated his 21st birthday on the front porch of his Lexington home.

Nearly eight years later, a Frankfort man will stand trial for the shocking sniper-style slaying, a crime that left investigators with more questions than answers for more than half a decade.

Jury selection was scheduled to begin Tuesday in the trial of Shane Ragland, a former University of Kentucky student and son of a prominent Frankfort businessman.

Friday, however, the trial was postponed until March 11 to give Mr. Ragland's defense team time to challenge FBI metallurgical test results.

Mr. Ragland, 28, was arrested July 14, 2000, and pleaded innocent to murder charges six years — to the day — after the shooting.

He was released on $1 million cash bond posted by his father, Jerry Ragland, and indicted on first-degree murder charges several weeks later by a Fayette County grand jury. He faces life imprisonment if convicted.
