        TV picks: Set the VCR for Alex Haley's Roots, the 1977 landmark miniseries about 17-year-old slave Kunta Kinte (LeVar Burton). Roots airs 9-11 p.m. today through Friday on the Hallmark Channel, and repeats noon-midnight Saturday.

        • Critic John Kiesewetter also says The American Experience looks at the creation of Mount Rushmore (9 p.m., Channels 48, 54, 16), followed by Ken Burns' Statue of Liberty film (10 p.m., Channels 48, 16).
