Clairol adding to jobs here

P&G transfers some executives

Greater Cincinnati will gain jobs — fewer than 100 over all — as a result of Procter & Gamble Co.'s $4.95 billion acquisition of Clairol last year.

The consumer-products giant will move some marketing executives from Clairol's hair-care brands, such as Herbal Essences or Infusium, to the Cincinnati headquarters, said Rob Matteucci, who is overseeing the integration for P&G.

Some jobs in business-support services and customer-marketing groups also will be added here, he said.

The transition will hit hard at Clairol's headquarters in Stamford, Conn.

Mr. Matteucci was there Tuesday, delivering the news that P&G would eliminate 460 Clairol jobs in Stamford, 165 elsewhere in the United States and 815 overseas.

Overall, P&G hopes to save $200 million a year from combining its hair-care business with Clairol.

It will leave about 250 people in Stamford as part of a new global hair-color and professional products group.

Hair coloring is essentially new for Procter & Gamble, which has years of experience in other hair-care lines.

“We want to maintain the Clairol expertise in areas that are new to P&G, and that's why we've got this new organization here,” Mr. Matteucci said from Stamford Tuesday. “Our intent here is to drive the business.”

The cuts announced Tuesday were the first phase of the Clairol integration and should take about six months to complete, Mr. Matteucci said.

The second phase, covering manufacturing plants, is expected to be announced in March.
