Winter takes a break

By Jenny Callison
Enquirer Contributor

Folks shed their wraps and surfaced for an unseasonably warm day as the mercury reached 52 degrees Saturday.

“This is like a June or August type of day for a lot of golfers,” said Bill Donaldson, assistant pro at Avon Fields in North Avondale. “We've got a big crowd out here today. I'd say three times the usual number.”

Mr. Donaldson said the municipal golf course began getting calls for weekend tee-times as early as Monday, when the long-range forecast came out.

Elsewhere, hordes flocked to get their grimy cars washed.

“This will probably be one of the busiest weekends of the year for us,” said Chris Sandusky, co-owner of Finneytown Auto Wash and Mount Healthy Auto Wash.

“We washed more than 200 cars on Friday and we'll probably wash 250 today.”

More warm weather is in store, according to AccuWeather. Today's high could hit 62, with Monday's high expected to be merely 58.The record high for that dateis 68 degrees.

Jim Lott, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service, said this week's warm spell is not unprecedented.

“It's not unusual to have a warm period during the wintertime. You hear about a January thaw. That's kind of what we're going through. There's a strong high pressure system in the Southeast, which sends a flow of warm air blowing north.”

By Thursday temperatures will be in the 40s with colder weather expected for next weekend.

That would suit Chip Perfect just fine. Mr. Perfect, general manager and co-owner of Perfect North Slopes in Lawrenceburg, said perception is an issue for the ski resort when temperatures climb.

“Our problem with weather like this is people's assumption that they can't go skiing,” he said. “We have plenty of snow.”
