Boone Co. jailer picked as marshal
By Patrick Crowley
The Cincinnati Enquirer
BURLINGTON Boone County Jailer John Schickel, a 25-year law-enforcement veteran, has been nominated to be a U.S marshal by President Bush.
The nomination was announced by Kentucky's two U.S. senators Republicans Jim Bunning of Southgate and Mitch McConnell of Louisville. They had recommended Mr. Bush nominate Mr. Schickel for the position.
The president has chosen a proven law-enforcement officer for an important post, Mr. Bunning said. John's doing a fine job, and I will do what I can to see that he is quickly confirmed.
Mr. Schickel's nomination must be approved by the Senate Judiciary Committee, of which Mr. McConnell is a member. It's unlikely he will have to appear to testify before the committee.
It's my understanding that in most cases the U.S. marshal nominees are voted on by the committee without having to appear, Mr. Schickel said Wednesday.
If approved by the committee, Mr. Schickel's nomination would go before the full Senate for a confirmation vote. A vote of the Judiciary Committee has not been scheduled.
A Republican active in party politics, Mr. Schickel has served as Boone County Jailer for 14 years. Before that he spent more than a decade as a Florence police officer.
If confirmed, Mr. Schickel will step down as jailer. Boone County Judge-executive Gary Moore, also a Republican, would appoint an interim jailer until the November election.
U.S. marshals provide security for the federal judiciary, transport prisoners, protect witnesses in federal cases and track fugitives.
The position would be for the Eastern District of Kentucky, which is based in the federal courthouse in Covington.
