Team plays on through mourning

OXFORD The student body at Talawanda High School will come together this afternoon for a memorial service for a popular teacher and assistant basketball coach.
Immediately following the service, the girls basketball team that Sarah Oberhauser helped coach and mentor will board its bus en route to the biggest game of the season.

There's no doubt that basketball's second right now, head coach Patty Reinknecht said. Everyone's been hurt by this.
The Braves travel to Monroe, in a three-way tie with Talawanda and Franklin for first place in the Mid-Miami League South division.
The Braves remained tied by defeating Edgewood on Monday, as the team was still reeling from the Saturday morning death of Ms. Oberhauser in a traffic collision. An Eaton, Ohio, man has been charged with a red-light violation and misdemeanor vehicular homicide.
Monday's game was the toughest thing that we've had to do, Ms. Reinknecht said. Starting with the minute we walked in the gym, we had a few meltdowns. As a coach, I didn't do much (Monday); and honestly, I'm not sure how the team was able to respond the way they did.
The team played with inspiration Monday, and Ms. Reinknecht believes the same will hold true as the season moves on without Ms. Oberhauser, a 31-year-old chemistry teacher and volunteer assistant coach who had been an outstanding player herself.
They say that they're playing for her in her honor, Ms. Reinknecht said. On one of our player's shoes is written the phrase, "Play every game like it will be your last,' which I think is a good approach.
