McConnell raises $3.5 million
The Associated Press
WASHINGTON Kentucky's U.S. Senate race is shaping up to be an expensive battle.
Republican Sen. Mitch McConnell filed a fund-raising report with the Federal Election Commission Thursday showing that he had $3.5 million on hand at the end of last month.
He took in about $1 million during the six-month reporting period that ended Dec. 31. Of that, about $800,000 came from individual donors and $200,000 came from Political Action Committees associated with corporations and interest groups.
Mr. McConnell is seeking a fourth term, which would tie him with former Democratic Sen. Wendell Ford as the longest-serving senator from Kentucky.
Democrat Lois Combs Weinberg's report showed that she had about $740,000 on hand as of Dec. 31. She raised about $500,000 in the last six months of the year.
Mrs. Weinberg's report showed that she put $93,000 of her own money in her campaign during the six-month reporting period. Overall, she has put $228,000 of her own money into the campaign, according to the FEC documents.
Individual donors gave Mrs. Weinberg about $350,000 in the last six months of the year. During that period, she also took in $16,500 from Democratic committees and about $41,000 from Political Action Committees.
Mrs. Weinberg is an education and civic activist. She has never run for office before, though her father was Gov. Bert Combs.
Also running is Democrat Tom Barlow, a former 1st District congressman. Mr. Barlow did not immediately return a call Thursday, but he said this month that he raised less than $5,000.
