Doc Severinsen will pop in for his 75th birthday
By Janelle Gelfand
The Cincinnati Enquirer
Doc Severinsen will be celebrating his 75th birthday with Erich Kunzel and the Cincinnati Pops, when he visits the orchestra at Riverbend Music Center, July 5 and 6.
His 75th birthday is July 7.
There's no one else like Doc, Mr. Kunzel says about the trumpeter, who is known for his flamboyant attire as much as his exhilarating high notes.
Mr. Severinsen will be observing a double milestone: It's 10 years since he left The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson.
He joined The Tonight Show Orchestra in 1962 and was its music director from 1967 to 1992.
For his 75th birthday show, he plans an evening of swing classics and trumpet acrobatics.
Mr. Kunzel estimates he has collaborated with Mr. Severinsen at least 25 times over about 30 years including their album Unforgettably Doc on Telarc. The Pops conductor, who brought Mr. Severinsen to Riverbend for his 70th five years ago, promises he'll invite him back for his 80th, too.
He's in better shape than he's ever been, Mr. Kunzel says. He practices four times a day, no booze, works out and he's a health nut. So he's going to be around for a long time.
Mr. Severinsen's last appearance with the Pops was the live national broadcast on PBS, Fourth of July from the Heartland, on July 4, 2000.
