'Producers' national tour headed for Cincinnati stop
By Jackie Demaline
The Cincinnati Enquirer
Around the country, fans book tickets as much as a year in advance, and premium seats sell for $480. But Greater Cincinnatians only have to sit tight until fall to see the Broadway hit The Producers.
According to Playbill On-Line (www.playbill.com) Cincinnati will be the second stop on the show's first national tour.
The musical is based on Mel Brooks' 1968 film of the same title. The longtime cult favorite is about a pair of scheming producers who decide to create a surefire flop, Springtime for Hitler, and reap the rewards of its instant failure. Mr. Brooks adapted the film for Broadway, where it became an instant hit.
The first stop on the tour will be Pittsburgh in mid-September, Producers co-writer Thomas Meehan told The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette in a story posted on the Playbill site. He said the musical would continue to Cincinnati, where it would play at the Aronoff Center as part of Fifth Third Bank Broadway in Cincinnati season.
It's a show we would love to have, but the season is still taking shape, said Brad Broecker, Broadway in Cincinnati producer, who would neither confirm nor deny the report.
He plans to announce the season this month.
The Producers has broken every Broadway sales record since its opening in April.
When it won 12 awards at June's Tony Awards, it toppled an almost 30-year-old record held by Hello, Dolly! (10 awards in 1964).
