SHARONVILLE Two days before she was shot and killed outside of her regular Alcoholics Anonymous meeting Sunday afternoon, Joyce L. Chancey said in court documents that she was worried what her estranged husband might do if she showed up at the AA session.
Mrs. Chancey, 43, on Friday received a protection order against Stephen G. Chancey from a Butler County court. In a written statement to the court, she alleged that Mr. Chancey had sent threatening e-mail and voice mail messages, warning her not to go to the meeting.
He has been acting emotionally unbalanced and mentally unstable. Now I fear what he will do to me if I show at my meeting on Sunday.
Mrs. Chancey was shot just after noon in the parking lot of the building at 2051 E. Kemper Road. She sustained multiple gunshot wounds to the head.
Mr. Chancey, 50, is charged with aggravated murder, and a Hamilton County Municipal Court judge on Monday ordered that he be held on a $1 million bond.
Police say Mr. Chancey waited for his wife outside the building, then approached her with the gun and killed her.
As part of the protection order issued Friday, Mr. Chancey was to turn over all deadly weapons. Butler County sheriff's deputies were not able to serve Mr. Chancey with the order before the shooting, said Maj. Anthony Dwyer of the Butler County Sheriff's Office.
The Chanceys were married in Gatlinburg, Tenn., in August 1996, lived in West Chester and had no children together, court records show. Mrs. Chancey worked as a nurse at a University of Cincinnati health clinic for students and employees. Mr. Chancey is an engineer.
Mrs. Chancey and her 15-year-old daughter moved into a Sharonville apartment last fall and she filed for divorce. Court records show that both Chanceys had restraining orders issued against each other.
Mrs. Chancey's daughter is staying in the area with her father.
