Timeline of Justin case

Justin's Case in depth Feb. 28, 1997: Justin Moore born to Regina Moore and Jerry Dorning of Covington. (The couple now lives in Boone County.)

Nov. 14, 1997: Ms. Moore asks Richard and Cheryl Asente of Girard, Ohio, to adopt Justin, now 10 months old. The Asentes had adopted Justin's brother Joseph on Dec. 29, 1995.

Feb. 17, 1998: After Kentucky authorities approve interstate adoption, Ohio approves Justin's placement with Asentes. He moves to Girard.

March 26, 1998: Moore and Dorning advise their lawyer they do not wish to proceed with the adoption.

June 5, 1998: Asentes file in Ohio to adopt Justin.

July 6, 1998: Kentucky judge rules that Kentucky has jurisdiction over Justin, despite Ohio's approval of interstate transfer.

Aug. 17, 1998: Moore and Dorning file for custody of Justin.

Feb. 4, 1999: After refusing to dismiss the custody request, Kentucky judge rules the Asentes must return Justin to his biological parents and a month later orders visitation for biological parents.

April 8, 1999: An Ohio probate judge rules that Ohio has jurisdiction in the dispute, preventing transfer of custody.

Oct. 29, 1999: Ohio's 11th District Court of Appeals overturns the ruling, saying Kentucky has jurisdiction.

December 1999: Justin begins weekend visitation with biological parents.

April 19, 2000: The Ohio Supreme Court agrees to rule on the state's role in the custody fight.

June 2, 2000: The Ohio Supreme Court agrees to let the case proceed after the Asentes' lawyers missed a filing deadline two days earlier by one minute.

July 27, 2000: Justin's visitation schedule is modified to minimize travel time. He is supposed to visit his biological parents in Northern Kentucky every third weekend. The biological parents are allowed to visit him in Ohio for one weekend per month.

Aug. 21, 2000: After barring the couple's lawyers from addressing the court because of the missed deadline, the Ohio Supreme Court agrees to let a national children's advocacy group argue on behalf of the Asentes.

Aug. 22, 2000: Ohio Supreme Court justices hear arguments on the jurisdiction issue.

Aug. 23, 2000: The Ohio Supreme Court rules 7-0 to uphold the state appeals court decision deferring to Kentucky's jurisdiction.

Sept. 15, 2000: The Kentucky Court of Appeals rules Justin should remain with the Asentes.

Dec. 2000: Ms. Moore and Mr. Dorning ask the Kentucky Supreme Court to overturn that ruling.

April 25, 2001: Kentucky Supreme Court agrees to hear the case.

February 15, 2002: Kentucky Supreme Court hears oral arguments.
