An organizational meeting for those willing to work on a committee to help pass a $53.9 million bond issue for the Talawanda Schools has been scheduled for 7 p.m., Tuesday, at Miami University's Campus Avenue Building. The 7.78-mill bond issue will appear on the May 7 ballot.

The Talawanda Board of Education has voted to put a 7.78-mill bond issue on the May 7 ballot. The owner of a $100,000 house would pay an additional $238 annually, Superintendent Phil Cagwin said.
The key in my mind is that with the state's help, we have the opportunity to upgrade (all) the school facilities, Mr. Cagwin said. Long-range, this will get us the highest standard this district has ever had.
Besides building a high school and elementary school, the 27-year bond issue approved Monday would pay to renovate the existing high school for use as a middle school, upgrade the middle school for use as an elementary school and add 5,183 square feet to Maud Marshall Elementary School. Stewart and Kramer elementary schools would close.
Talawanda would be eligible to receive 24 percent of the project's cost sometime between 2009 and 2011, according to estimates provided by the Ohio School Facilities Commission, Mr. Cagwin said. When the district receives that money, it would be applied to the debt and the millage should be reduced, he said.
We have no written guarantee the money will be available that's the downside, Mr. Cagwin said.
