Sinn Fein's Adams back in town to raise funds, ring peace bell

N. Ireland activist to speak at Quinn's

By Terry Flynn
The Cincinnati Enquirer

COVINGTON — Gerry Adams, president of the Sinn Fein party in Northern Ireland that has been linked to the Irish Republican Army, will visit the Tristate in March.

Mr. Adams, 53, will be in Covington for a Monday-night fund raiser March 11 at Jack Quinn's Irish Ale House & Pub on Fourth Street, according to Quinn's owner Aidan Bowles.

“We don't have all the details yet, but my understanding is he'll ring the World Peace Bell in Newport and visit the cathedral in Covington before coming to Quinn's for a fund-raising dinner and reception,” Mr. Bowles said Friday.

Mr. Adams, a native of West Belfast, where he still lives, has been involved in the civil-rights movement in Northern Ireland since the 1960s. He was imprisoned for his efforts in 1972 and again from 1973-1977, and narrowly escaped death when he was shot repeatedly in a 1984 assassination attempt in downtown Belfast.

He was elected president of Sinn Fein in 1983 and was elected minister of Parliament from West Belfast the same year. He refused to take his seat in Westminster because of the compulsory oath of allegiance to the queen.

Martin McGuinness, minister of education for Northern Ireland and No.2 in Sinn Fein as chief negotiator, came to Northern Kentucky last year as part of a visit to several cities in the United States and Canada. He rang the peace bell and took part in a $50-per-person reception at Jack Quinn's.

Mr. Bowles said plans called for Jack Quinn's to be closed to the public March 11 so that all three floors of the pub could be used for Mr. Adams' visit. He said closed-circuit TV cameras would be set up so people on all three levels could see and hear Mr. Adams speak. Prices for the dinner and reception have not yet been set.
